How to unlock the pickaxe spell for garden boulders

Release-day walkthrough; unlock sequence · Sources checked October 3, 2026

The short answer

Complete Professor Linnea’s first music lesson, then speak to her for the pickaxe spell. The September 30 prologue walkthrough places this class on Tuesday, after Clary’s first garden assignment. Its reward is the tool enchantment for garden boulders.

Follow the first-class sequence

  1. Complete enrollment and the opening dormitory sequence.
  2. Read the lesson letter and follow your current calendar to Linnea’s music class.
  3. Finish the lesson and speak to Linnea afterward. Check the songbook for the newly taught pickaxe spell.
  4. Return to the Botanical Garden’s boulders with that spell available.

Rocks need a different tool from soil or trees

Song of Tilling prepares soil; the axe enchantment handles dead wood. Neither unlocks the pickaxe reward by itself. Use the pickaxe song’s current casting prompt for rocks. The walkthrough establishes the reward and purpose, not every keyboard/controller targeting binding or a fixed calendar for all later patches.

Removing paths is a later, separate use

Version 1.01 also makes cobblestone paths mineable with a pickaxe. That is intentional removal, not a guaranteed repair for invisible paths. You need not clear every boulder before planting Clary’s starter seeds.
