When does time pause in the Songs of Glimmerwick demo?

Public demo · Sources checked September 26, 2026

The short answer

In the patched demo, the clock stops while the player menu or a shop is open. Eastshade’s 0.464 notes say flute mode does not stop it; the studio points players to the music classroom’s practice rooms for a time-freezing place to practice. Story event deadlines are a separate question: Eastshade says those events wait for you.

Where can you read without the clock moving?

Eastshade changed demo 0.464 so the clock stops in the player menu and shops. Open those interfaces when you need to inspect your inventory or shop choices. An April Steam discussion shows why players asked for this: one player felt rushed while reading menus and trying to find the map. The patch is the source for the current demo behavior; the original complaint describes an earlier experience.

Why does the clock move while playing the flute?

The developer explicitly kept the clock running in flute mode. For unhurried song practice, use the time-freezing practice rooms in the music classroom, as Eastshade directs in its patch notes and discussion. This is a location-based option, not a global pause toggle. The source does not establish a setting that stops time everywhere.

Does a moving clock mean you missed class or a story event?

Eastshade told players there is no intended story time pressure. Its event system waits for you, even though ordinary clock time and NPC routines still move. Read our event and NPC schedule guide for the event puck and nighttime exceptions. If the behavior you see differs, check your demo version; 0.464 changed menu pausing and 0.466 added more clock tutorials.
