Songs of Glimmerwick character creation: name prompt and witch wording
Use the name you want your character to have when the demo asks for the starting name. Several controller players reported that a prompt labelled as a save filename became their character name, leaving them with labels such as “1” or “a1.” Separately, Eastshade clarified on September 27 that the game’s witch title applies to men too; that wording alone does not show that your appearance choice failed.

Check the name before investing in the save
- Enter an intentional character name, including the capitalization you want, rather than a temporary slot number.
- Review the text before confirming. Controller players in the June discussion described the misleading save-filename wording; another player saw a direct character-name prompt.
- At the start of play, check the name wherever the game displays it before proceeding far into the demo.
This precaution follows the reported outcome; we have not reproduced every device’s prompt. On Steam Deck, Valve also warns that text entry may require manually opening the virtual keyboard. See the Deck input checklist.
Can you rename an existing character?
The linked discussion does not provide a working post-creation rename method. Renaming a save file on disk is not demonstrated to change the name stored inside that save. Preserve your existing progress while looking for a current in-game option or developer instruction. If you decide to start another character, inspect the save-slot choices first and keep the earlier save; this guide does not ask you to overwrite or delete it.
Does “witch” mean the game made your character female?
A German-language player questioned the witch wording after choosing a masculine appearance. Eastshade’s later answer says the title includes men. That resolves the meaning of the title, not every question about the creator: the thread does not document a gender selector, pronoun menu or later appearance editor. Choose the appearance you prefer, and assess any unexpected name or dialogue separately from this shared setting term. Our language guide distinguishes translated text from voice audio.
If the prompt and outcome disagree
Record the displayed prompt, input device, game language, demo version and resulting name. Those details distinguish the reported controller label from a different naming or localization bug. The sources cover the public demo and a September developer clarification; they do not prove that the September 30 release will retain the same prompt.
